Lift replacement: a new lift in an old shaft

Before replacing an old lift, we check whether a new MP lift will fit in the existing shaft. To do this, we measure the shaft, pit and headroom and inspect the machine room.

Pit and headroom for different MP series

The width and depth of an old shaft can usually be dealt with by choosing the right car. The pit below the lowest stop and the headroom above the top stop are harder. The diagram shows how much space different MP series need.

Headroom is shown at the top and pit at the bottom, in millimetres and at the same scale. Values are typical. For the MP Flex series they are reduced under EN 81-21; without reduction, the manufacturer’s pit is 1024-1350 mm and headroom 3400-4325 mm. For MP GO a special version is available on request: headroom down to 2500 mm, pit from 400 mm. The MP Mobi platform lift needs the least space, but it travels at 0.15 m/s and suits only low-rise buildings.

5Check

Will a new lift fit your shaft?

Enter the dimensions of the old shaft. We will show which cars fit according to the manufacturer’s typical values and which are possible only on request.

Enter the dimensions you know. We ignore empty fields. We check against the manufacturer’s typical values. We will give a final answer based on the drawing for your project.

Hydraulic, 0.15 m/s, up to 6 stops. Pit from 200 mm, or even less on request. Such a pit and headroom are possible only with compensatory safety measures; without them, the manufacturer specifies 645 mm and 2814 mm.

Typical constraints of an old shaft

An old shaft almost always has some constraint, and for the most common cases we know what to offer.

Typical constraints of an old shaft and what we offer for each
Narrow shaftIn MP Flex the traction machine is mounted on the rear or side wall. A 4-person car fits in a 1270 × 1380 mm shaft, an 8-person car in 1575 × 1680 mm.
Shallow pitMP Flex needs a pit from 312 mm under EN 81-21, MP GO from 695 mm. If the pit is shallower, it can be deepened; we do the building works ourselves.
Low headroomMP Flex needs headroom from 2800 mm, MP GO from 3000 mm; a special version is available on request. These values apply under EN 81-21, and we record this in the design.
The machine room is keptMP GO Room or MP V work with the existing machine room. MP Flex 200 can also be installed in it.
The machine room must be clearedMP GO and MP Flex work without one: the traction machine is in the shaft and the control cabinet is next to a landing door.
Single-phase power supplyA 230 V option is available for a limited range, up to 480 kg for Flex. The speed may then be reduced.

Lift in an old building

Replacing a lift in an old apartment building is about more than the shaft. We take into account the stairwell, the residents who live there during the works and the appearance of the building itself.

If the building has never had a lift

If the building has no shaft, we build one: in the stairwell, or as an external steel-frame shaft attached to the building, with glazed or solid cladding.

Such works require a design and approvals. We have our own architect and crews, so we can take on floor slab strengthening, the pit, the headroom and the frame. More details on the Turnkey page. If the building is public, car and door dimensions are set by DBN V.2.2-40 (Ukrainian building code); see the Lift for people with disabilities page.

How we check the shaft

The table is only a guide. We will give a final answer after an on-site survey, which is free of charge.

  1. Site surveyWe measure the width and depth on every floor, the pit, the headroom and the door openings, and inspect the machine room and power supply. What exactly to measure is shown on the Lift dimensions page.
  2. Drawing for your shaftThe drawing shows which model fits and what car size results. This is where the internal dimension first appears, so you can check what will fit into the car.
  3. Building worksWe determine whether the pit needs deepening, the floor slabs strengthening or the openings altering. This usually has the greatest effect on cost.
  4. CostCalculated after the site survey, with equipment, building works and installation shown separately.
  5. Dismantling and installationWe remove the old lift and install the new one. MP wiring comes pre-assembled and the controller learns the shaft automatically, so less manual adjustment is needed after installation.
  6. DocumentsBefore commissioning, the lift undergoes conformity assessment under the Technical Regulation on Lifts (Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 438). We prepare the commissioning documents.

Where old lifts have already been replaced with MP

Below are replacements with MP lifts in Dnipro known from open data and the factory’s materials.

  • 3liftsPublic building, DniproMP GO Room, two of 630 kg and one of 450 kg, 7 stops, 1 m/s, Supra car. The factory shows this project in its own portfolio.
  • 10floorsResidential building, DniproNew MP lift replacing the old one, 2020.
  • 630kgOutpatient clinic, DniproMP lift replacing the old one, 4 stops, 1 m/s, 2021.

These lifts were installed by various companies, so we list them only as examples of replacement. Addresses of individual buildings are available on request.

Questions about lift replacement

Who pays for lift replacement?

Lift replacement is paid for by the building owner or co-owners: the homeowners’ association (OSBB), the property manager or the balance-sheet holder. City co-financing programmes are run by the city, so please check their terms there; we make no promises in advance. For the owners’ meeting, we will provide a drawing and a calculation for your shaft.

What is the service life of a lift?

For an old lift, the service life is stated in its technical passport, and its actual condition is assessed during an inspection. For a new MP GO, the environmental product declaration states a design service life of 25 years.

How much does lift replacement cost?

We calculate the cost of lift replacement after the site survey, as it depends on the number of stops, the condition of the shaft and the scope of building works. What to check in a proposal is described on the How much does a lift cost page.

Will the new car be larger than the old one?

Sometimes, yes. MP Flex equipment takes up little space, so according to the manufacturer’s table an 8-person car fits in a 1575 × 1680 mm shaft. We do not promise this without a site survey, as shafts vary a great deal.

How long will the building be without a lift?

How long the building will be without a lift depends on the scope of dismantling and building works, so we state this period in the proposal for your project.

Can the old landing doors be kept?

Usually not: new landing doors are installed together with the new lift. Solid MP doors have fire resistance E 120 or EI 60 to EN 81-58. We check the openings for them during the site survey.
